Before the day I met my sponsored child Mihret, I knew little about her circumstances and I was unsure what to expect. We had only exchanged a few letters and after witnessing the reality of poverty in Ethiopia, I dreaded facing the possibility that her story might be the same as so many of the other children we had met in Addis Ababa – one of abandonment, hunger, disease and hopelessness.
I can usually tell when the 19th of April is approaching. I’m a lot more tense than usual and begin to feel on edge for no apparent reason. I seem to be a lot more impatient and my poor family bears the brunt of it.
